It was a cold night in February of 1692, and Tituba was doing her daily chores. Abigail and Betty had been suffering from a strange illness. With the rumors going around town, Tituba knew it was only a matter of time before she would be questioned. Sure enough on that same night a doctor came to examine the girls and he diagnosed them to be victims of witchcraft.
After his daughter was diagnosed, Samuel Parris began asking the girls about incidents he had witnessed. He said that he has seen the girls chanting strange words in the kitchen and dancing around in a circle in the forest with no other than Tituba.
At first the girls denied the accusations that these events involved witchcraft, but after hours of questioning the stories changed. Abigail said, "It wasn't me calling upon the devil, it was Tituba!"
Tituba was called into the room was faced with the pointing finger of Abigail screaming "She made me drink blood." She also initially denied the accusations saying that Abigail begged her to teach her how to be able to see her future. "It was harmless fun and I didn't afflict the girls," said Tituba.
Tituba soon realized that if she continued to deny being a witch, that she would more than likely be sentenced to death. So she made the decision to make a confession. She had talked to Parris many times and knew exactly what everyone wanted to hear. She described how she had sold her soul to the devil. There was a book that she had to sign with blood. As she did so she stated that she also saw the blood of two local outcasts; Sarah Osborne and Sarah Good. Tituba also said that there were four other blood stains, but she did not know who they were. This in turn started the panic that anyone in Salem could be one of the other four witches.

The Afflicted
As a creative nonfiction story about the Salem Witch Trials I
would like to do it as the perspective of either one of the afflicted girls,
like Betty Parris, or one of the accused witches like Tituba.
It was winter in the year 1961; Betty Parris was sitting in the family
kitchen with her orphaned cousin Abigail Williams. Her father, Samuel Parris
was busy working on sermons for that Sunday. He was the new Pastor for Salem,
Massachusetts. With many wifely tasks, Betty’s mother was often away so she and
Abigail spent many nights in that kitchen. The girls had been curious about
their future. Tituba, originally from Barbados decided to teach the girls a few
tricks. It all started out as harmless fun. With the instruction of Tituba the
girls started performing things like the “Venus glass”. They would have a glass of water and then drop
an egg inside and wait for a symbol to appear. This symbol would tell them
about the future husbands and what not. They would continue for weeks playing
games of fortune telling with Tituba.
After many weeks of hearing her father talk about how the whole
town was against him, and wanted to kick him out Betty became ill. Soon after
her cousin Abigail and other girls who had joined those in the kitchen also
became ill. Many doctors came from all over to try and diagnose the girls. None
were successful until the day one claimed that they were cursed by a witch. The
girls were then questioned numerous times about who the evil woman was who did
this to them. At first no names were said but after a while the adults started
suggesting people. The girls then ended up pointing their fingers at Tituba.
Tituba did have a history of performing witch craft but confessed to never
wanting to harm the girls.
I think there are a couple of different stories in the Salem Witch
Trials that I can have come to life with a creative piece. It’s just a matter
of picking one.

The First Wicked Witch
Tituba
Tituba was an Indian woman who was originally from South America and was captured into slavery as a child. She was then transported to Barbados, where she was purchased by Samuel Parris. Tituba was between the age of 12-17 when she was purchased. Parris was unwed at the time so it was just the two of them until the year 1680. During this year they were living in Boston and this is where Parris married, started a family and became a minister. As some point he also purchased another West Indian slave named John, who later became Tituba's husband. In 1689, Parris moved the family to Salem were he became the towns new minister.Parris's wife was normally busy with duties that come along with being a ministers wife, so Tituba took care of the three children most of the time. At nights, Tituba would entertain Betty Parris and her cousin Abigail Williams by the kitchen fireplace. Thinking it was harmless fun, she would tell the stories of magic and spirits from the Caribbean and play fortune-telling games. Under the Puritan code these activities were strictly illegal. The young girls thought it was much fun and secretly spread the word among their friends. So it soon turned into a small group of girls that joined Tituba around that kitchen fire at night.
A couple months later in the winter of 1692, three young girls including Abigail and Betty began acting in odd behaviors. They would twitch, babble, have odd rashes, and crawl around on the floor. After the girls got ill, doctors couldn't diagnose them so they said it was the work of the devil. After the girls displayed theses symptoms, Tituba prepared a "witch cake" and fed it to the dog. This cake was supposed to reveal the identity of the afflicter. Samuel Parris was furious when he found out about the cake. Soon after the girls were pointing fingers at Tituba as being the afflicting witch.
After being beaten so many times by Samuel Parris, Tituba learned and knew exactly what the Puritans wanted to hear. She first apologized for hurting Betty because she loved her and never wanted to hurt her. Tituba also told tales of witchcraft in Salem including blood-red cats, rats, and demonic creatures. She also said that Satan came to her with a book to sign with her blood. She said that in the book she saw the red stains of eight others including Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne. This is what started the craze of accusing others of being witches. The people of Salem knew that there were six other un-named witches that need to be discovered.
Because Tituba confessed so early she never actually had a trial. She spend 13 months in jail until after the Salem Witch Trials were over. An anonymous person paid for her and her husbands release. There are reports that she then moved to Kansas but after that there is no record of her.
It is crazy to think that the people where were actually witches and admitted to it were normally set free. Why was Tituba imprisoned for so long? Also was it all just a plan of Parris's to get back at the town for shunning him as a minister? I guess we will never know the real truth.

My interview with a witch
For
my paper I really wanted to interview an expert from the Salem Witchcraft
Museum but I was not able to get responses back in time. So I found a real life
witch name Kim Spink who lives here in Denver. She is only 19 years old but
says she has known she was a witch since she was a little girl. Unfortunately
because of our schedules we were unable to do the interview over the phone so
it was conducted over email. This interview with Kim made me realizes the
witches are more about earth, spirit, and energy. Witches are not all evil
devil worshipers who cast spells on others. This makes me think that a lot more
of the accusations of the Salem Witch Trials were truly false. Here are a few
of my interview questions with Kim.
Do you think that all the people killed in the
Salem Witch Trials were actually witches?
No, I think that a lot of the people of Salem were
just scared of the unknown. A few
people made accusations and people followed.
I don’t think that anyone should be
sentenced to death, witch or not, but I
believe the people who were killed in this time
were not all witches.
When you go out do you ever dress in special witch ware
or just in normal clothes?
Haha I don’t really have special “witch ware” and I am a
normal person so I wear normal
clothes. I do have ceremonial attire for special
occasions but besides that we as witches
mostly just want to blend in. Wearing
all black, scary makeup and pointy hats wouldn't
really help serve that
purpose. Even in the past, witches were
not preserved as good so
we wanted to look as normal as possible.
How does it make you feel that people portray witches as
ugly woman on brooms who
worship the devil?
I think that a lot of people need to understand that the
idea of the devil is actually a
Christian
deity and really has nothing to do with witches. What I personally believe is
to
be the best person possible, teach others, love people and the earth, honor
my
family, forgive, and be true to myself and my beliefs. Besides, why would I
want to
believe what I believe in is evil? Also if you think about it most
religious people practice
a form of magic, it’s just called a prayer.
Getting to know a witch was definitely interesting. I don’t know
if I am completely sold on the whole magic thing but I do believe its each
individual prerogative.

Bewitched or Poisoned
The Salem Witch Trial took place in colonial Massachusetts where young girls (including Abigail Williams, Ann Putnam Jr., and Mary Walcott) started acting in odd ways. They would kick, scream, throw things and utter strange phrases. These little girls actions caused community-wide hysteria which led to the deaths of 20 people.

After doing some research on the Salem Witch Trail's I came across some different theories of why these girls started acting the way they did. Rumors of witch craft and curses were the cause of the trials in the first place but what if these actions had another cause and all those people were innocent? I came across the article Witchcraft or Mycotoxin? The Salem Witch Trials. It's from the Academic Journal of Toxicology and can be found when searching the Academic Search Premier database. This article describes research done showing that the reason the girls started acting in these odd ways may not have anything to do with witchcraft after all. Ergot poisoning among livestock was a huge concern in the 1600's and could have been the reason for these odd behaviors. All of the sources that I found while doing my research had something to do with the trials and most of them were academic journals. Almost every article I read also had a little summary of the Salem Witch Trial's at the beginning. Besides these few similarities, all the articles I found were completely different. There was some comparing the trials to Harry Potter.Others talked about the gender roles in the Trials; which I will be looking more into for my final paper.
I really like this source and recommend it to others interested in learning more about the Salem Witch Trail's because it puts a modern twist on why the people sentenced to death were innocent. It's a credible source because it's a journal from Harvard Medical School if Clinical Toxicology and was published on June 1, 2000.
The article goes into more details of symptoms of known people who have been affected by eating affected livestock and how these symptoms are very similar to those of the girls in Salem.

Ever since I can remember Italy has been a place of great interest to me. My dad is Italian and his grandparents actually moved to New York from Italy. I never got the chance to meet very many people in my family on my dads side. My dads father left when he was very young and his mother passed away a few years later. So my dad was raised by his grandparents. I have heard a few stories about my great grandparent but they both passed away before my second birthday so I never got the chance to get to know them. I would love to have been able to ask them questions about the Italian culture, food recipes, family histories (possibly Italian Mafia?), and so much more. This is why I am passionate about learning everything I can about Italy.
At this point in my life my dream would be to be able to travel to Italy. It would be amazing to be able to spend a year there just learning and experiencing life in a whole new way. I always think about the movie, "Eat, Pray, Love" when Julia Roberts' character is sitting outside on the patio with a glass of wine when the waiter brings her a big plate of authentic spaghetti. One day I hope to experience this because anything that involves pasta, bread, and pizza is my food heaven.
Another thing that has always interested my is the Mafia. It would have been a crazy time to have lived. My mom used to tell me stories about how people in my family on my dad's side would disappear or something weird would happen but no one would talk about it. Everything would be hush, hush. She always thought it might have something to do with the mafia. It could be a long shot but who really knows?
